The Robert S. Wilson Community Respite, A Signature Program of The Robert Irvine Foundation

Robert Irvine Foundation Quote

The Robert Irvine Foundation is focused on giving back and supporting military personnel (active, retired, and veterans) and first responders through resiliency and health and wellness programs, in addition to financial support of top rated and thoroughly vetted veterans service and first responder organizations.

Robert “Bob” Wilson believed that every person deserves a chance to live, learn, work and play in the community, including children with disabilities and special needs, “Little Warriors” – children of wounded warriors – and those who care for them.

Through the generous support of the Robert Irvine Foundation, The Robert S. Wilson, Jr. Community Respite Program at Easterseals continues Bob’s legacy of leadership and volunteerism by providing critical support to these families.

About the Program

Easterseals offers center-based weekend respite for children with and without disabilities of wounded warriors, veterans, active duty military, first responders and civilian families. Each weekend respite is planned to include a different monthly theme and ensure a variety of interactive activities. Children ages 6 months to 10-years-old receive one-on-one care from vetted volunteers, who are carefully selected to ensure a successful pairing between the child and volunteer.

The activities take place monthly at The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Inter-Generational Center in Silver Spring, MD and can involve entertainers, petting zoos, adaptative sports and other engaging hands-on activities.

This program is dependent on the number of volunteers that sign up. Therefore, space is limited, and you may be placed on a wait list until we find the best volunteer to be matched with your child.

**Due to COVID-19, center-based respite is temporarily on hold until we can resume safely.

Monthly Family Kits

To help support families during COVID-19, Easterseals provides monthly Family Kits filled with a “Do It Yourself” activity. Each kit is based on a different theme and is age appropriate for the whole family. Whether families are decorating cookies, painting bird houses or unleashing their inner creativity with an arts & craft box, it is sure to be fun for the whole family.

The goal of the kits are to help promote family togetherness while providing stress free activities. *Kits are limited.
