Military Family Advocate Ellyn Dunford Joins Honorary Board of Easterseals

SILVER SPRING, MD – Easterseals DC MD VA is thrilled to announce that Ellyn Dunford, Child and Military Family Advocate and spouse of Gen. Joseph F. Dunford, Jr., 19th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has joined our Honorary Board.

“We are so fortunate to have the wisdom of Ellyn Dunford on our Honorary Board,” said Jon Horowitch, President and CEO of Easterseals DC MD VA. “She had previously served on our Ambassador Committee for four years and brought great insights on emerging needs to help us create innovative programs, breaking down the stigma of seeking care, and raising awareness of our services, so we know she will be an immediate contributor to the Honorary Board. It will be a privilege to work side-by-side with her to ensure veterans and military families have equal opportunities to Live, Learn, Work, and Play in their communities.”

Ellyn Dunford HeadshotEllyn was a physical therapist specializing in trauma, acute care and pediatrics for over 30 years. In fact, Ellyn was first introduced to Easterseals in the early 1990s when she worked as a physical therapist with Easterseals’ DC Child Development Center.

Ellyn draws on her own experiences as a military spouse who has lived through numerous moves and deployments with General Dunford and their three children. Her deep empathy and connection to other military spouses and her professional knowledge as a physical therapist makes her an exceptional advocate for military families, other individuals with special needs, and their caregivers.

“I am honored to support Easterseals. It has always been an organization that responded to the needs of their clients as they grew, needed employment and aged. Easterseals recognizes that the needs of the military and their families are no different from the needs of anybody else within their communities,” said Ellyn Dunford. “The service they provide to all people is a great model that provides unique opportunities for military and civilian families to come together to achieve their potential and live meaningful lives.”

Ellyn has dedicated a great deal of time to volunteer efforts, including with the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, Leadership Education Seminars, USO and various spouse clubs and Family Readiness Programs. She considers it a privilege to have watched Family Readiness Programs morph from non-existent to spouse/volunteer-led to professionalized with extensive training and management. Along with raising her family, she considers connecting with, and caring for military families, one of the most important roles she has ever held.

Ellyn holds a Bachelor of Science in physical therapy from Simmons College.
