Emily Sciarretta Beauty Q&A

Q. Why do you love or are interested in fashion/beauty for people with disabilities?

I love fashion for those with disabilities because I believe it's important for everyone to look and feel their best, and fashion makes people feel good about themselves!

Q. What do you think is the importance of disability inclusion in the fashion/beauty industry?

Disability inclusion is extremely important because of how fashion makes you FEEL.  Being disabled shouldn't exclude you from looking your best.

Q. What effect does the fashion/beauty industry have on body image for people with disabilities?

The industry tends to be negative for those who are disabled, but it is coming around! The latest development of NY fashion week having disabled models is a HUGE accomplishment, long overdue!

Q. Why do you think accessibility, adaptive equipment or other similar accommodations are not seen as fashionable?

Adaptive equipment is seen as not fashionable because it's so medicinal looking!  I've tried to change that by 'blinging out'  my entire power chair with rhinestones!

Q. Adaptations in commercial clothing are often needed for PWD. What is your favorite clothing hack or style tip?

My fav style tip is to accessorize! A beautiful scarf or jewelry transforms outfits.

Q. What advice would you give about developing a personal style despite clothing barriers?

Find a style that fits your body type and stick with it. Wear what you love: be bold!

Q. What things make you feel beautiful or fashionable?

A great pair of boots, a colorful, well fit dress and favorite pieces of jewelry!

Q. What can we do to further encourage designers/fashion houses to market to PWD immediately following this chat?

Designers need to understand that there's a market for PWD and it needs to be filled.  PWD want to feel beautiful too, and should be given that opportunity!
