Autism and ABA

Autism is a developmental disorder that greatly impacts the individuals' ability to communicate and engage in appropriate social interactions. Becase autism is a spectrum disorder, each person with autism has their own unique strengths and challenges. It is up to the clinical team, with the assistance of the family to discover these strengths and challenges. Then we teach each client in the way that he/she learns best using highly individualized treatment plans.

ABA is an evidence based best practice treatment used to increase skill acquisition and to decrease maladaptive behaviors in individuals. It is currently the most effective form of therapy for people on the autism spectrum. ABA uses  various principles such as positive reinforcement, task analysis, prompt fading, preference assessments, shaping, discrimination training, and more to bring about meaningful changes in the participating individual. At Easterseals TN we utilize various ABA teaching procedures including Verbal Behavior, Discrete Trial Training (DTT), and Natural Environment Training (NET).
