Military Strong: Receiving with Grace

Webinar #3: Military Strong: Receiving with Grace

For many military caregivers, reaching out for and accepting help may feel uncomfortable and perhaps even like accepting defeat. This one-hour session focused on strategies to overcome this tendency, recognizing one’s mastery of the thousands of caregiving tasks and honoring your military caregiver mission.

Plus, in the past decade, women have come to play an increasing role in the armed forces of the United States. Unique experiences had by female veterans may present different caregiving issues later on for their caregivers, particularly compared to those issues encountered by those caring for male veterans. Although the burden for a caregiver may be different, it is important for the caregiver to maintain and monitor their health. You are encouraged to take time to consider the question of "what will help to sustain you," as the caregiving journey is more like a marathon than a sprint.

Guest speaker, Barry J. Jacobs, Psy.D, is a clinical psychologist, family therapist and one of the country’s leading thinkers, writers and educators about family caregiving. Dr. Jacobs has authored a number of publications including, The Emotional Survival Guide for Caregivers (Guilford, 2006). Dr. Jacobs received his bachelor’s degree from Brown University and his doctorate in clinical psychology from Hahnemann/Widener Universities.

Words from the Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, herself a military spouse, who states, "Reaching out is a sign of strength - reach out for this assistance today. And remember, you are strong – military strong."
