Before and After the First Time at Summer Camp

In Sharon Fay's own words, the mother of camper Max

UCP camp in fallMax Fay, 14, had been to an Easterseals family camp for nine summers, but in August 2014, he branched out and attended Easterseals UCP North Carolina and Virginia’s camp all on his own. Max lives with Down syndrome and autism spectrum disorder…and his parents live with all the fear and joy that come with letting child go to sleepaway camp for the first time. Here, they share the before and after of their son's first sleepaway camp experience at an accessible Easterseals camp.

BEFORE: Sharon and Andrew Fay’s Camp Preparation and Feelings
Max has loved Camp Easterseals family camp every summer for the last 9 years but we were always nervous sending him to camp all by himself. This year, we finally felt like he was ready. Apparently he had been ready for a while because when we asked him (in May) if he wanted to go to camp for a week by himself, he went to his room, put some stuff in a backpack, and walked to the front door.

While he was waiting for his camp week to come, we talked about which activities he was most looking forward to: pool or climbing wall? canoeing or horses? songs or campfire? He loves them all but the ultimate winner was dress-up in the costume room.

After all the excitement leading up to camp drop-off, we were somewhat surprised that Max was anxious and clung to us when we first arrived at camp. But Sam, the counselor assigned to Max, jumped right in and engaged our nervous boy. We were impressed that Sam had clearly read the pages of information we’d provided about Max in the camp application---and quickly picked up on tricks we use to communicate with our nonverbal child. We left camp feeling like Max was in good hands.

Max is at Camp Easterseals as we write this. We can’t help worrying, of course, and will be very excited to see our boy on Friday. But it’s impossible to say how appreciative we are that Max has a fun, supportive and loving camp in Camp Easterseals.

Note the picture of Max from Camp Can Do. I think it tells the story. (Counselor on the left is Sam, who was assigned to Max.) Max LOVED camp and is ready to go back. When his Dad came to pick him up on Friday, he got a wave as hello as Max went back to hanging out with a camp buddy at the canoes. Max was particularly proud of a tie-dye t-shirt he made: He put it on as soon as he got home and came to show us with a big "Ta-da!"

Looking back before camp, when we packed I used the list provided by camp, which was very thorough. I was very impressed with how camp staff inventoried everything we'd brought as we arrived. I had gone in just assuming some items would be lost since Max needs so much personal assistance and wouldn't be able to keep track of possessions himself. But everything camp back just fine, which was lovely. Everything returned in great shape, including our Max!
