Brianna was in a very tough place before she entered our program. She had her first daughter at the age of 16, dropped out of high school, and was later diagnosed with anxiety, bipolar disorder, and Attention Deficit Disorder. She explains, “Being a single mom at a young age with very little help was very hard.” She was first connected to Easter Seals NH as a component of other therapies she was receiving.
After Brianna had her second and third daughter, she wanted to obtain her diploma so she could start a career for herself. This incentive to obtain her diploma was heightened by the fact that her youngest daughter was behind developmentally and was not walking or talking when she should have been. When Brianna first started in the HiSET Program, she was very quiet and not confident in herself. These characteristics were shared by her children, who were all very timid and often felt anxiety in social situations. However, through the individualized supports provided to her in the HiSET Program’s small classroom environment, she was able to realize her potential to learn, ask insightful questions, and make strong academic strides. “Easter Seals NH’s HiSET Program was very helpful because they provided child care so I could study [in class],” Brianna explains. “They also provided dinner so I wouldn’t have to rush my kids to eat and speed to get to class.”
By the time she received her diploma, Brianna developed the confidence needed to set and achieve new goals for herself. Brianna is currently very happy as a Licensed Nursing Assistant; she has her Basic Life Support Certificate, a townhouse, and a car. Brianna summarizes the impact of her journey with Easter Seals NH: “I honestly don’t know where I would be without all that help. Now, my oldest daughter is outgoing, my middle daughter loves attention, and my youngest daughter walks, talks, and is such a love bug. If I keep writing I will cry because I’m so happy and grateful for what I have accomplished in a short amount of time. I will go back to school in the spring to get my Registered Nurse degree and Bachelors of Science in Nursing so I can one day become a midwife or OB/GYN.”
Thank you to the Citizens Bank Foundation for making this program possible for Brianna and over a hundred other individuals like her.
