Board Member Spotlight

Revitalizing the Capital

We’re proud to have Richard Lauricella as Chairman of the Capital Region Board for the last 5 years.  He is the Office Administrator of the prominent Albany law firm Wilson Elser Moskowitz Edelman & Dicker married with four children, who have also participated in our walks and other ESNY fundraising events.

He says, “ I had gotten to point In my life where I was interested in trying to do something to give back to the community.  I was looking around at a lot of different organizations.  My wife had been involved in some other not-for-profit organizations  but I couldn’t find one that I could really connect with.”

One of Richard’s colleagues, Jim DiBenedetto,  has a long  history with Easter Seals, having been part of the organization for over thirty years.  He told Rich that the time was right for a new regional leadership in the Albany area, that it was time to build on the success of Camp Colonie—and that Rich was the perfect guy to take on that leadership role.

Jim told him that “’Camp Colonie is right in your back yard. Come with me to the camp and take a look at it and see what you think.’  So we went over and if you’ve never been to Camp Colonie you’ll be hooked the minute you walk in there. It’s an amazing place. I really liked the dedication and the enthusiasm of the people that were involved.”

So Rich has taken on the challenge, as Chair, to  develop  new programs, and restore the Albany to its former vibrancy.

“Until you get involved you don’t really understand, but if you get talking to some of the parents and start talking to some of the veteran, then you realize how important it is to strive to provide those same opportunities for everybody.  And treat them all equally. You talk about bullying that’s been going on in the community for people with disabilities for a long time.  They are treated differently and sometimes for a physical ailment or sometimes it’s a little bit different wiring.  A lot of people just want to sweep it under the rug, but Easter Seals has always said  “Hey! People deserve the same as you and I and we’re gonna do everything we can to provide them with those same opportunities.”
