Easterseals (national) honored Sen. Dorothy L. Hukill, R-Port Orange, with a 2016 Outstanding Advocate Award during its June 13 Advocate Summit Awards Dinner, held in Washington, D.C. Easterseals created its Outstanding Advocate
Awards to honor elected and appointed public officials for their work to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities, and for all.
Hukill’s accomplishments cover many areas, such as protecting and expanding services for children with disabilities, voting rights, transparency in government, economic development, tax relief for Florida’s families, and support for our military and veterans and the Arts.
In 2014, Hukill championed a $100,000 legislative appropriation to provide Autism Diagnostic and Functional Assessment to over 75 children at the Easter Seals Autism Center in Daytona Beach. The Easter Seals Autism Center received a similar appropriation in the budget cycle for 2016-2017, which allows Easter Seals of Volusia Flagler Counties to conduct early diagnosis and expand treatment for underfunded clients.
Hukill has been the State Senator for District 8 since 2012, representing parts of Volusia, Lake and Marion Counties, as well as serving as a State Representative for House District 28 from 2004-2012.
“We could not be prouder that one of our local representatives has been honored with such a prestigious award,” said Lynn Sinnott, CEO of Easter Seals Volusia Flagler Counties. “Senator Hukill’s advocacy efforts have directly and positively affected the very children and adults we serve throughout our two-county area, and I’m thrilled to see her acknowledged as a trailblazer for disability advocacy in our state. We thank her for her leadership, and are delighted to be some of those who have been on the receiving end of her passionate work.”
