CRISTIAN RIVERA

“It made me open my eyes and really see that we all deserve the same respect.”

Cristian Rivera

Through the Easter Seals Youth Leadership Network, Cristian Rivera is gaining skills that are helping him make the transition from high school to college, and shape a bright, successful future.

Cristian and his fellow youth leaders meet role models with disabilities, make new friends and develop a sense of self-awareness and pride as people with disabilities.  They gain skills, learn about helpful community resources and participate in community service projects.

Like many of his fellow youth leaders, Cristian also took part in the three-day, overnight Youth Leadership Forum (YLF) held every summer at Bridgewater State University.

Cristian has Asperger’s Syndrome and a learning disability. He’s a high school senior and an athlete at SABIS International Charter School in Springfield and has his sights set on college and a degree in athletic training.

In a speech Cristian gave to some Easter Seals supporters, he talked about the impact Easter Seals youth leadership programs have had on him.

“I could’ve never been who I am today if it wasn’t for the Youth Leadership Forum,” he said.  “The YLF made me who I am today.”

“By surrounding myself with others who are seeking the same goals of friendship and acceptance, I have learned to be more open with everyone about who I am,” he continued.  “My friendships with the staff and delegates there grew rapidly, as did my confidence when I returned to my everyday life.

The Easter Seals Youth Leadership Network is funded by the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission and other generous supporters.
