Lauren,Prom

Lauren, Attended Rocky Mountain Village Camp “I was voted prom queen.”
In Lauren’s words:

“Easter Seals Colorado's Rocky Mountain Village (RMV) has been a very special part of my life. I first visited camp as a 7 year old little girl.  What I found at Rocky Mountain Village, was a world that allowed me barrier free adventures. Rocky Mountain Village gave me the opportunity to experience recreation & leisure activities that were adapted for my special needs. I was just like everybody else!!!

I also gained an extended family. One that I would look forward to sharing time with on respite weekends and summer camps for the next 17 years.

As I look back on the last 17 years, I reflect on the fact that I have made friends from all over the world.  Friends that I will always keep in touch with no matter where our life paths take us, friends that will never be forgotten.

Besides the recreation & leisure time I spent at RMV, I also attended special camps like Training for Transition & Talking with Technology.  Easter Seals’ Rocky Mountain Village has been a wonderful lifelong experience for me.

Garrison

Garrison, Received Hearing Aids “I heard my mom’s voice for the first time!"

Garrison from Colorado Springs was born with conductive hearing loss. When Garrison came to Easter Seals Southern Colorado at age two he knew few words. Two surgeries and a borrowed hearing aid had fallen short of allowing Garrison to do what we so often take for granted. To hear.

After being fitted for a new digital hearing aid by Easter Seals Southern Colorado in Colorado Springs the world became a very different place for Garrison. His vocabulary blossomed almost overnight. Tests done after he got the new hearing aid showed he was able to understand over 800 words.

Garrison, now a first grader, is keeping up with his classmates at Jefferson Elementary School in Colorado Springs and generally loving life. He loves karate where he is helping another hearing impaired child learn the sport, and loves music, often listening to Native American flute music as he falls asleep at night.

Besides Easter Seals, Garrison's parents also credit his kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Esquibel for his amazing progress. She was Teacher of the Year, so I guess she has many other fans beyond Garrison's family.

Garland and Daughter

Garland, Stroke Rehab participant, " I walked my daughter down the aisle"

I’ve been married for nearly 48 years to my wife JoAnn. We have four children and three grandsons. I retired from the FAA as manager of airway facilities at the Old Stapleton and DIA airports. I had my stroke in 1995 and was paralyzed on my left side. My life drastically changed. I couldn’t walk, needed assistance with everything, including my personal care. Eventually, I began to walk with a hemi walker and regained some independence.

After initial therapy, there aren’t many services for survivors like me, so I’d spend most of my time home alone, without productive activities. I started the warm water therapy program, but that was only one hour per week.

In 2003, though skeptical, I tried the program and have not looked back once because I love it! I feel better about myself and have begun to do things that I used to do, like use the computer. The program’s been a godsend to my wife. My one day a week, gives her much needed time to herself. Through the program, I set a goal to walk my daughter Carrie down the isle on her wedding day and as you can see from the picture, I was able to reach that goal!
