Sometimes all you need to do is ask. That is what Marsha White, a Housing Specialist for the Easterseals HOME Choice program, did when she asked Bill McCoy about what his company Towne Taxi did. Bill said that Towne Taxi takes people “anywhere they want to go.” This caught Marsha’s attention because HOME Choice is all about helping people get where they want to go.
Two and a half years later, Easterseals could not be happier about the partnership with Bill and Towne Taxi. For this reason, Bill McCoy and Towne Taxi are being recognized as the April Hero.
HOME Choice is an Ohio Department of Medicaid program. Through it, Easterseals provides people with disabilities who currently live in a nursing or group home the necessary pieces to achieve independent living. This can be achieved in a variety of different ways. It can be transitioning to their own home, an apartment with a roommate, or even help finding furniture. Easterseals knows that having your own home is an important part of achieving self-sufficiency and independence.
It was clear to Marsha that Towne Taxi could be a strong partner for the basic task of moving people, but then asked if Towne Taxi would also help with deliveries, prescriptions, and relocation. Bill said yes, because they had busses, taxis, and all the materials necessary.
Although Towne Taxi’s primary focus is transportation, they have continued to go above and beyond for the individuals served by Easterseals. When asked why, Bill told us that “it doesn’t cost anything to be kind.”
He has always tried to help others. “My years of doing what I’m doing, it is a fulfilling thing to be able to help people," he explained. "That’s my take on all of it...I always try to be different than the rest of them. Whatever we could do to help people.”
You can see this mindset in how Towne Taxi is run. They take extra time to confirm that all of the vehicles are safe, that all of the drivers have had background checks and have the proper identification. In addition, he always is looking for new ways to serve his surrounding community. Bill has worked with the school board and written grants to allow taxi companies to take children to school. In short, Bill's priority is people. Even with retirement in sight, he continues to work 70+ hours a week!
“Towne Taxi has been quite an asset to HOME Choice over the last couple of years. They have helped with a number of moves for the HOME Choice participants,” shared Bruce Reller, former Service Coordinator of Easterseals HOME Choice and now a Worksite Coordinator with CommunityLink. Reller witnessed numerous incredible acts of service from Towne Taxi, and declared, “Whether it is clearing out large storage facilities, moving large items out of old houses, and getting large couches into small apartment doorways, Towne Taxi is always there...Towne Taxi is such a great company.”
Former HOME Choice participant Russell Henderly really appreciates Towne Taxi. They helped move him into his new apartment in Silverton and they even transported some of his items from his nursing home. When asked about the experience, Henderly said, "I use them [Towne Taxi] often now. The drivers are nice."
Bill feels good about the partnership between Towne Taxi and Easterseals as well. He declared, “Any time I can spread the word about Easterseals, I surely do. I believe you kind of give back, and anything you can do to help the people you work with and do business with, it just made a difference in their lives. It’s kind of made a difference in mine. At the end of the day, it’s fulfilling.”
Marsha echoed the significance of the partnership between Easterseals and Towne Taxi when she shares, “Towne Taxi has always gone the extra length to provide great care, patience, and service to the individuals that we serve.”
We are beyond thankful for Bill, his son Billy, and the entire Towne Taxi Company for their constant willingness to help out the individuals served by Easterseals! They have helped our participants achieve the ultimate goal—a chance at independence and self-sufficiency.
