Goodwill FAQ

Why should I donate to my local Goodwill® rather than another thrift store?
Goodwill® Stores support many workforce development and disability services in our communities helping people live as independently as possible, with dignity and respect.

Who does Goodwill® help?
Goodwill® serves those with barriers to employment and independence: including individuals with disabilities, those with limited work histories, young adults who are new to the job market, individuals from the refugee community seeking independence, as well individuals who have experienced unemployment in recent years.  Both our Goodwil®l stores and our off-site employment and disability programs help give a hand-up to our neighbors.

If I shop at a Goodwill® store, will I be depriving disadvantaged people of stuff they need?
No. Goodwill® serves disadvantaged people by educating, training and placing them into jobs. By becoming gainfully employed, these individuals gain resources to buy the things they need.

My mother shops at Goodwill® all the time. I tell her it's better to shop elsewhere because low income people need those goods. Who is right?

Your mother, of course! Goodwill® shopping is for anyone who wants to save money. Our in-store surveys show that people from all walks of life and income shop at Goodwill® frequently. Plus, we use the proceeds from all our store sales to fund our job training and employment services.

What happens to donated items that aren’t sold at Goodwill® stores?
Because Goodwill® stores raise funds for Easter Seals-Goodwill programs, we’ll do what we can to get items in sellable shape.
When an item cannot be sold in our stores, we’ve found other creative uses for them. For instance, some old clothing scraps can be recycled into industrial wipes (cleaning cloths) for industrial buyers. Other items that are too damaged for retail sales may be recycled.

How often does your store inventory change?
New merchandise is put on our sales floor every day. We receive thousands of donations every week, and we process them as quickly as possible in order to make them available for sale. No matter when you visit, Goodwill® will always have something you are looking for!

What is your return policy?
You may return any item within 7 days of purchase for an exchange only. You must have the original receipt and the price tag attached to the item(s).

Does Goodwill® make house calls to pick up donations?
Contact your local Goodwill® to find out whether or not pick-up service is available in your community.

Our company/organization has furniture to donate.  How do I make arrangements for donating these items?
Goodwill® offers pick up service for businesses, organizations, and schools that would like to donate:

If your company would like to donate any of the above, or any other items that are acceptable donations, please contact us.

My neighborhood has plans for a community sale and we’d like to donate all unsold items to Goodwill®.  How do I schedule a pickup service?

Goodwill® welcomes the opportunity to work with the organizers of your neighborhood donation drive, and our trucks can be found in many neighborhoods throughout the year during yard sales.  Goodwill® can work with your organizers and schedule a time to arrive when the yard sale is over to pick up the items and issue receipts.  Please contact us so we can work together to make the event a success!

What items will Goodwill® not accept?
Our Goodwill® stores are able to salvage more than 5 million pounds of donated items a year, keeping them from local landfills.  However, there are still some items which we’re not able to accept because of safety or disposal issues:

Auto Parts and Tires Hot Water Heaters Mattresses/Water Beds
Baby Cribs Large Appliances Toilets/Bathtubs
Baby Walkers Carpets and Padding Chemicals/Paint
Children's Car Seats Computer Monitors/Hard Drives Construction Materials
Hide-A-Bed Sofas Large Organs Large Pianos
Regulation Size Pool Tables Newspapers and Maxazines Stained or Ripped Furniture
Televisions Water Heaters

If you have any questions about whether or not you can donate an item please contact your local Goodwill® store.

Why won't you take all of the stuff I want to donate?
We sell/recycle the majority of all goods donated, however we are forced to take some dirty and broken materials to the landfill. Please help us minimize our waste by donating only items that are in good condition.

Is my donation to Goodwill® tax deductable?
Yes.  Your donations of clothing and household goods are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.  Easter Seals-Goodwill Northern Rocky Mountain is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.  Just save your donation receipt until tax time!

How much is my donation worth?
The IRS requires the donor to assign values based on fair market value, or the value of the item if you were to sell it. Here are some general guidelines for tax deductible donations of used items to Goodwill®.  The IRS also has a helpful publication.

Can I donate my car or boat?
Yes, we will accept working and non-working cars, boats and other vehicles. Please call 866-492-2770 (toll-free) to arrange a pick-up and answer any questions you may have.
