Easterseals Introduces 2018 Volleyball Ambassador

January 5, 2018

When Emily Hurst, of Hockessin, first walked through the doors of Easterseals she was very nervous, but little did she know how much she would grow to love the environment, the staff, new friends and, of course, the dance parties. As those nerves faded, Emily’s mom, Julia, has watched her grow into a more independent woman thanks to the skills she is learning at Easterseals.

Emily’s needs are met by supportive staff at Easterseals where she attends day services for people with intellectual disabilities.

“Easterseals has made Emily more confident, independent and assertive. She communicates more and expresses herself more. She has learned to approach people if she wants to communicate,” Julia says. “It makes me feel good when she comes home and signs ‘friends’ and ‘dance.’ This is one of the ways that she lets me know that she had a good day.”

Julia knew Easterseals would be a perfect fit for her adult daughter since they helped Emily meet her milestones starting at nine months through Easterseals Children’s Therapy services. Though Julia knew there would be some adjustments for Emily coming from a familiar school environment, Julia was confident Easterseals day services for adults with intellectual disabilities was the best fit for their family,

“I don’t know what my life would look like without Easterseals. It helps the individual grow more independent while away from their parent,” Julia says. “I know I can count on and trust Easterseals that it is a safe and happy place to be. They help Emily grow, not just cognitively, but socially. They are helping to develop her whole being.”

Emily has been selected to serve as the Volleyball Ambassador for the 2018 Easterseals/CAI Volleyball Challenge, which will take place March 2-4, 2018 at William Penn High School in New Castle, DE. The Volleyball Challenge is a family-friendly, three-day event, which brings the community together to raise critically needed dollars for Easterseals to serve children and adults with disabilities. For more information about the event, go to www.volleyballchallenge.com or contact Laura Becker at 302-221-2065 or lbecker@esdel.org.

“Emily feels cared for and likes being a part of the Easterseals family. She wants to live her life to the fullest. This program complements this by taking her out into the community and helping her to develop her social life,” Julia says. “It feels good to know that Easterseals is part of a team who shares my goal of giving Emily the highest quality of life possible!”
