Easterseals Delaware & Maryland’s Eastern Shore employee, Jennifer Cossa, of Hartly, DE, has been recognized as one of the top five Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) in Delaware for her leadership in supporting people with disabilities. Pamela Montague, of Georgetown, DE, was awarded Honorable Mention in the Advocate category. Cossa, who supports individuals attending the day program for adults with intellectual disabilities in Dover and Montague, who supports individuals in Easterseals Supported Employment program, were nominated by their supervisors and honored at an annual event held by the Ability Network of Delaware.

“I am honored and humbled to have received the Leader Award. Thanks to my talented co-workers, ‘teamwork’ played the biggest role. Each of us has different skill sets which truly complement one another,” Cossa said. “While Easterseals mission is to provide exceptional services to ensure that all people have equal opportunities to live, learn, work, and play in their communities, I feel that the wonderful individuals that I have supported over the past ten years, have enabled me to gain more appreciation for living, learning, working, and playing.”

Direct Support Professionals are the people who work as direct care workers, in-home support workers, and personal attendants to ensure that people with disabilities are able to live and work more independently and in community settings. Bailey and her fellow honorees were selected by an independent committee brought together in celebration of “National Direct Support Professional's Recognition Week.”

“I am honored to be recognized for this award. Often times, higher functioning individuals with intellectual disabilities who work alongside the general public in competitive employment in our communities have been overlooked or disregarded in times of need,” Montague said. “It is important to me, and encourages me to make sure that they are heard and reminded often that they do, in fact, matter.”

Cossa received the “Leader” award, which recognizes a DSP who “embraces and advances the vision for the future of his/her organization or profession and leads by example.”  Montague received the “Advocacy” award. This award recognizes a DSP who persistently advocates for what is best for the individual she supports, in a polite yet steadfast manner. She also maintains good working relationships and demonstrates respect for all.
