Delaware Celebrates Easterseals 100th Anniversary

April 18, 2019

In 2019, National Easterseals celebrates its 100th anniversary as the indispensable resource for individuals with disabilities, veterans, seniors, and their families. The organization’s reach touches communities across the country with 71 affiliates offering a variety of services including early intervention, autism services, caregiver services, recreation and respite services, and senior care

Locally, in celebration of the 100th anniversary, the cupula (dome) on top of Legislative Hall will be lit up in orange, the color of Easterseals new brand.

A local affiliate, Easterseals Delaware & Maryland’s Eastern Shore will mark the 100th national anniversary of Easterseals by celebrating an expansion of its Salisbury children’s therapy services, thanks to the generous support of local foundations and donors. The celebration will take place on the anniversary date of Easterseals, April 22, 2019, at Easterseals’ Salisbury location at 1336 Belmont Ave., Salisbury, Maryland.

“Easterseals began in 1919 when its founder, Edgar Allen, lost his son in a streetcar accident,” said Easterseals Delaware & Maryland’s Eastern Shore President/CEO, Ken Sklenar. “Troubled by the lack of adequate resources for children with disabilities, Allen went on to sell his business and establish a hospital in his hometown of Elyria, Ohio. From his vision has grown a network of organizations who impact the lives of people with disabilities and their families every day. Whether it’s through the delivery of direct services to support people with disabilities in the community or through advocacy on disability issues at the local and national levels, Easterseals has been and will continue to be a leader.”

Easterseals Delaware & Maryland’s Eastern Shore offers a range of services, including children’s therapies, assistive technology, recreational camping, day programs for adults with physical or intellectual disabilities, and respite services for caregivers.
