Celebrating ADA with U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (Ret.)

Celebrating 25 Years of the American with Disabilities Act with U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (Ret.)

Please join Easter Seals as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) at our annual dinner featuring U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (Ret.), as the keynote speaker on Thursday, October 8th at the Chase Center on the Riverfront. A longtime champion of disabilities rights issues, Senator Harkin was the chief sponsor of the ADA in the U.S. Senate.

U. S. Senator Tom Harkin (Ret.) dedicated his 40-year tenure as a public servant to the citizens of Iowa to promoting and protecting equality for individuals with disabilities. During his career, he has been involved with almost every significant piece of legislation affecting people with disabilities and is considered to be the national leader on disability policy.

As a young senator, Tom was tapped by Senator Ted Kennedy to craft legislation to protect the civil rights of millions of Americans with physical and mental disabilities. Tom knew firsthand about the challenges facing people with disabilities from his late brother, Frank, who was deaf from an early age. What emerged from that process would later become Senator Harkin's signature legislative achievement — The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA has become known as the "Emancipation Proclamation for people with disabilities."
