The latest IAP news

Twenty-five educators from over 10 member school districts of the Leyden Area Special Education Cooperative came together for a “make and take” Professional Development Workshop led by Autism Specialist Sarah Smith, focused on Independent Work Systems for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders. 95% of the Cohort participants were from schools who attended the Illinois Autism Partnership Experiential Training in Summer 2017. These schools are receiving ongoing coaching and support to continue to build capacity and improve outcomes for learners with autism.  Attendees who participated in the pre-workshop questions had the opportunity to choose one of the sample activity tasks to take back with them to use with their students.

Teachers, paraprofessionals, speech therapists, and administrators spent the first half of the training session learning about Work Systems, why they’re important, and how they can be implemented in the classroom or other environments. An emphasis was placed on how to develop tasks that can meet various objectives and the efficiency of task development, allowing for varied experiences and generalization for the students. The second half of the session was spent creating tasks and materials for independent work systems to take back to the schools.

Some participant responses to the question, “What is your biggest takeaway from today’s session?” are listed below:
