Easter Seals Philanthropitch 2014Easter Seals Central Texas was awarded top prize of $53,075 at the second annual Philanthropitch fast pitch event April 28 at ZACH Theater sponsored by Greenlights and BuildASign.

Much like the popular television show Shark Tank, Philanthropitch is a fast pitch forum for Austin’s most promising nonprofit organizations looking for access to human and financial capital.  Easter Seals Central Texas, along with seven other finalists, had four minutes each to pitch their organizations for a piece of $100,000 and acceptance into the Greenlights Accelerator Program; a consulting service designed to fast-track organizational growth and impact. Judges included local entrepreneurs, business leaders, and philanthropists.

Easter Seals Central Texas proposed an expansion of their innovative social venture; Easter Seals Landscape Services, which helps put people with disabilities to work at a residential landscaping business.

Tod Marvin, President and CEO of Easter Seals Central Texas was in the hot seat, making the pitch. “Philanthropitch was an incredible experience and we’re honored to receive the top prize. There are so many amazing non-profits in Austin doing great work and we are proud to be among them,” he says. “The Easter Seals Landscape Services program has been enormously successful and changed lives for those who would never be able to work otherwise. As people with disabilities age, they are at risk of being institutionalized if they can’t support themselves. For them, a job is NOT just a job, it’s a path to freedom. This award allows us to expand, providing opportunities for many others hoping to participate.”

Easter Seals Landscaping Services launched this past September; an earned revenue model based on the belief that Austinites will embrace social responsibility, choosing a non-profit service over for-profit competitors. They hope to create 200 new jobs for people with disabilities over the next three years. To date, the venture has generated $30,000 of new business.
