Significant Milestones

Following is a brief history of this more than nine-decades-old organization. Senator Arthur Capper's legacy of helping individuals with disabilities is indeed living on.

1920 - The Capper fund established by Arthur Capper - United States Senator, former Kansas Governor, publisher, philanthropist and devoted advocate of children with special needs

1934 - Conversion of the informal Capper Fund to The Capper Foundation for Crippled Children, a non-profit Kansas Corporation

1947 - The Capper Foundation becomes the area's first comprehensive rehabilitation facility with the donation of property from the closing of the Topeka Orphan's Home

1951 - Arthur Capper dies and leaves assets to purchase present campus

1959 - New facilities built to expand programs and services

1971 - Infant Program added to include early intervention services

1985 - Gift of warm water pool made

1986 - Outreach Program established

1997 - Center for Assistive Technology in Kansas City, Missouri acquired from United Cerebral Palsy

2005 -The Capper Foundation and Easter Seals affiliate to grow our resources and services and help more children and adults living with disabilities gain greater independence.

2011 - Celebrated 90 Years of Building Abilities with an ice cream social in Gage Park on July 14th.

2012 - Merged with Individual Support Systems, Inc. on January 1st to provide services to children, teenagers and adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

2014 - Merged with Creative Community Living (CCL) located in Winfield, El Dorado and Arkansas City, KS, effective July 1, 2014, to continue Building Abilities Since 1920.

2016 - Celebrated 95 years of Building Abilities with a birthday party on July 14th to honor Arthur Capper on his 151st birthday. On the same day, Arthur Capper honored with statue dedication on Kansas Ave. (click here to see a video of the festivities). In October, ESCF unveiled their new fresh look as part of Easterseals brand renaissance. This new look is in the form of a brighter logo, a new spin on our established name, Easterseals Capper Foundation, and a refined brand voice that will further energize our long-time supporters and inspire a new generation of friends.
