For 36 years, Wanda has smoked and had a chronic substance use problem. It was a tough life for Wanda who is 54 years old now. Thanks to the supportive Easterseals UCP staff who provide Assertive Community Treatment, Wanda is living healthier and has a bright future.
Assertive Community Treatment, a mental health community-based program at Easterseals UCP, offers treatment to adults with severe and persistent mental health needs that have not been adequately treated by more traditional treatments. In Wanda’s case, she receives assistance in budgeting, vocational and managing life skills.
About 17 months ago, Wanda kicked the habit cold turkey. She told the team, “I got to the point where I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. There had to be more to life than the destruction I was in. I said I’m going to grab a hold of it and never let go.” Wanda did exactly that and has been living a cleaner life. Wanda has improved her physical health, set boundaries for herself, schedules and attends doctor’s appointments and is highly engaged with Easterseals UCP staff.
Ashley Green, an Easterseals UCP Assertive Community Treatment team member, said, “Wanda is highly motivated and dedicated to change. Against all odds, she continues to persevere.” Easterseals UCP is proud of Wanda’s success.
