She calls herself the “Equipment Geek,” at Easterseals UCP in North Carolina and Virginia. Karen Fraller has the incredible ability of matching grants for equipment to special needs individuals.
This year Karen celebrates 31 years with Easterseals UCP.She started her journey helping people with disabilities through an adult development activities program.Karen continued on as a vocational coordinator assisting individuals in finding employment. Soon she earned the nickname, “Camper Karen” while managing a family camp years ago.Wearing a lot of different hats is what Karen has done well over three decades. Each role involved making a difference in the lives of children and adults with disabilities.
Since 2004, Karen has been the Information, Referral and Special Assistance Program Manager, an Easterseals UCP outreach program. For 14 years, she has spent much of her day on the phone and computer connecting families to appropriate Easterseals UCP staff and finding equipment through grants to help children and adults in need.“I enjoy making modifications to equipment and purchasing equipment including assistive technology, durable medical items and smart technology equipment through grants,” said Karen.
Due to her experience at Easterseals UCP and knowing the staff over the years, Karen has a talent for answering questions and providing them with the necessary resources. She said, “I have the best job and I love helping people.”Karen is responsible for helping thousands of people through answering questions, connecting them with services, and getting them equipment that insurance typically wouldn’t pay for.
She encourages staff and people in the community to reach out to her if they need to know about the current equipment grant, conferences, services and anything that could help improve their lives.
