WILMINGTON, N.C., December 19, 2016
Ashira was outgrowing her wheelchair and needed more supports. Her family turned to Easterseals UCP for help. Staff were able to help her through the Healthy Living Grant, a time-limited grant supported by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and Easterseals UCP.
Ashira, diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and Seizure Disorder, requires a wheelchair or therapeutic stroller that tilts, has harness straps, specialized seating, foot positioners and more. Having a collapsible specialized stroller not only helped Ashira but also her family as her wheelchair doesn’t collapse and their family car doesn’t have a lift.
It was a team effort to apply for the grant by obtaining proper vender information and necessary documents from doctors and therapists. Karen Fraller, Easterseals UCP Information & Referral Program Manager; Lorie Winn, Site Director at EMPOWER Wilmington, and a host of other staff worked hard to apply for the Healthy Living Grant. The good news and the new wheels for Ashira came last week. Ashira is all smiles with her new stroller and supports.ABOUT EASTERSEALS UCPEasterseals UCP is a non-profit organization serving the special needs communities in North Carolina and Virginia.
