Morganton, NC, July 19, 2018
For most of Steve Coutu’s career, he has worked in the mental health community. One of his big accomplishments to the community and to people with mental health challenges is growing the Assertive Community Treatment program at Easterseals UCP in the Morganton area. The team began small serving one county but because of Steve and his team, their services have blossomed to help people in five counties including Burke, Caldwell, Alexander, McDowell and Catawba.
The Assertive Community Treatment program is a team consisting of a psychiatrist, nurse, substance abuse specialist, peer specialist, and vocations and housing specialist. The goal of the team is to help people with significant mental illness live successfully in the community, reduce hospitalizations, incarcerations and homelessness.
As Steve got closer to retirement, fellow staff wanted to come up with a unique gift to honor Steve’s decades of hard work at Easterseals UCP in North Carolina. With the help of the shop class at Hallyburton Academy, a blessing box was erected in front of the Assertive Community Treatment office at 400 South Green Street in Morganton (see map). The blessing box will accept items from the public needed for the homeless.
Congratulations to Steve upon his retirement and a special thanks for his years of dedication to people with mental health challenges. We invite the public to help fill up the blessing box and support homeless individuals.
