Thursday, September 15, the United States Department of Education, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, visited The Easter Seals Safeway Inc. Child Development Center in The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Inter-Generational Center in Silver Spring, Maryland.

The Department of Education was given a tour of the Easter Seals Inter-Generational Center, followed by a roundtable discussion with members of the Easter Seals staff and clients who benefit from Easter Seals services at the early care and education centers. During the roundtable, members of the group discussed the importance of  inclusive classrooms in early education, where children with and without disabilities learn and grow together, as well as the innovative and unique Early Learning Supports for Autism Program (ELSA), a center-based, early-intervention program for young children with autism.

The mission of the Early Care and Education Program at Easter Seals is to provide high-quality, early childhood education and early intervention services for young children in an inclusive setting. Our goal is to provide stimulating educational experiences which promote each child’s social, emotional, physical and cognitive growth and to help each child reach his or her full potential.
